Fabulous night out in Columbia CA!
Who'd have thunk you'd find a traveling troupe performing broadway hits in a preserved historic yet also modernized theatre high in the hills? Certainly not me, but I'm glad my wife did because this was a hoot.
The lobby is an old fashioned ice cream parlor so you can have your dessert before or in the middle of the show. It's god all the old charm you'd expect from a historic building, which does little to be lie what the theatre holds.
The theatre is designed in the classic style with a nice balcony level and a classic mezzanine. It's painted white and has modern sound and lighting, which adds to the production value but takes from the history a bit. There's not a bad seat in the house. We sat in row two and had the actors right in our faces, an advantage having the kids with us!
The show was great. Quality across the board. Highly recommend catching what's playing!Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 8Oh no 0 - 20 Aug 2023
Gorgeous theater! What a hidden gem! Went to see the production of Jersey Boys and I was blown away! Broadway caliber talent. Top notch production! Definitely going to come up to see more shows in the future.

Fabulous play! The actors were fantastic and the play was funny and enjoyable. We look forward to coming back to future performances. Every seat is good. It's a small theater and you enter from the one cream parlor. Worth coming up and staying the night at one of the two quaint hotels.

It not a 100% handicap accessible to move around the sidewalks leading into the theater! Employees are very courteous not being there at this particular theater. Wasn't sure where the entrance was from the lower part parking lot. Had to drive up and drop off at the sidewalk.

Look. You just do not expect a mountain town of 2,000 people, with buildings as old as the state, to have top-notch theatrical productions.
But Columbia does. Thanks to Sierra Rep.
My parents have been going here at least twice a year for the last several years, and have always bragged about what they've seen. For their 60th wedding anniversary, they bought an entire row for their kids and their kids' families to see "State Fair", a Rodgers & Hammerstein show that I was unfamiliar with.
I was blown away. And having been a performer in the past, I don't get blown away easily.
The details: The theater takes up half of the first floor of the Fallon Hotel, and the woodwork is likely just the way it was in 1875. The important things for theatrical productions have been updated: seats, sound, and lighting, and it's likely that the stage floor is replaced regularly. I think it seats 300, so it's an intimate setting, not like the huge theaters on Broadway. Very dinky balcony that you really don't need. My father told me that Carol Channing, the famously theatrical entertainer (she sang bass), sat in the balcony regularly for these shows after she and her husband retired to Modesto. As in all professional stage shows, these performances are copyrighted and audio or video recording are PROHIBITED.
I looked over the cast, and there's a balance between professional performers from New York & the Bay Area and local folk. In fact, you'd have trouble telling which was which, because they're all accomplished actors, singers, and dancers. There are ads for Sonora families to rent rooms for thespians who move here temporarily to be in the shows. Again, this brings surprisingly high quality to these productions; no wonder Carol Channing was impressed. Because the theater is so small, you feel like you're right in the action, even if you're in the back row. The floor is barely angled, so you're in trouble if tall people sit in front of you! Specifically, "State Fair" was fantastic, well worth the ticket price, and the ticket price is lower than you'd pay in Sacramento.
Three cheers and twenty-one guns to Sierra Rep for these top-notch shows!Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Mishelle L.Tracy, United States2822973347 Dec 2017

Regarding Trailer Park Christmas , R rated is one thing but this was outrageous. Repeated singing of the lyrics "f---k Christmas ,really! This is offensive on so many levels.
Sierra Rep should be ashamed at staging this production at Christmas time.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nick P.Newark, United States122064521 Jul 2016
Fantastic rendition of State Fair to a packed house. Every song every dance every set was fantastic. I've been coming for a few years and this even topped Mary Poppins. The acting was way out of league for a small town. Great job and thank you!
