If you're looking for the standard "German" place to eat while visiting Hamburg, this place is it. It's seated right along the Elbe River, with three floors worth of seating. The bottom two floors are full service dining, while the terrace is more relaxed with servers that mill about. All have great views of the river, and for my visit I enjoyed the sun up on the terrace.
I arrived around 3pm on a Sunday, looking for a late lunch after walking and sightseeing all morning. A polite man pointed me upstairs when I said I wanted to sit outside, and found that you seat yourself up there when I arrived. They have English versions of the menu available with a QR code, and free wifi so no worries about roaming data when trying to decide what you want to eat. Also, plenty of the staff speak English, so for tourist that might ease your worries.
I had their seasonal beer, which was a light wheat for the summer. It was the small size, and plenty for me as beer isn't always my go-to drink.
My meal consisted of the fried fish (local white fish) with cucumber potato salad. Everything was fresh, tasty, and my favorite part was that salad. It was so different than my normal "American" potato salad and I loved it.
My only complaint would be that their prices are on the high side. There's plenty of other places with cheaper options and probably larger plates. But for the atmosphere, I'd say it was worth it. It's a great establishment, with great homemade beer (their vats are right in the dining room), and very close to many tourist areas. I highly recommend a visit!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 1834841421623 Mar 2020
They cater to a multilingual crowd, so you will be provided an English menu if you need it. Additionally, the waiters for us and the other members of our group (we came in separately) were pretty fluent in English as well. If you want a summary of what kind of food they serve: it's what a lot of tourists typically imagine/want when they picture an idyllic meal in Germany. Meaning beer and large hunks of meat. This was exactly what my dad has been dreaming about for YEARS. Lots of seafood, lots of meats, lots of things that pair well with their selection of beer, and a breadbasket with Danish rye bread and a pretzel. Very hardy and straightforward.
Blockbräu is a brewery located in the Landungsbrücken terminal building of St. Pauli-Landungsbrücken (St. Pauli Piers). St. Pauli Piers is the Port of Hamburg's biggest landing area and one of the big tourist attractions in Hamburg's St. Pauli's area, so expect heavy foot traffic. Though, this restaurant is one of the places that can actually support a whole lot of people, so you have a pretty good chance of finding a table here. It's a pretty good spot where they have windows overlooking the Norderelbe (Northern Elbe River). I would recommend asking for a table on the second floor if you want a view, as the view from up there isn't blocked by the boats/other restaurants. I've heard that they have a third rooftop floor with a panoramic view, so you might want to ask about that.
Overall, after walking down and then back the Eingang Alter-Elbtunnel (Elbe Tunnel), I'm glad we found a place to sit down. There's also a line of food kiosks/stalls that line the path east of the terminal building, but Blockbräu was one of the closest sit-down restaurants that weren't Hard Rock Café. With what we had, my favorite was their Crisp-roast Sucking Pig. It wasn't a big bone-in thing my dad originally wanted, but it was super succulent and delicious. My next favorite was the Sailor's Schnitzel, which is basically a stuffed pork cutlet. But while those were my top two, I got to try a lot of the dishes with how many people in our group were here. I didn't necessarily like everything (not a fan of the Captain's Salad), but I feel that every dish was made really well. What needed to be fried was fried well, what needed to be grilled was grilled well, and what needed to be baked was baked well. It's a pretty decent place.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 6 Oct 2015
Blockbrau's location right on Hamburg's harbor provides a splendid view of the Elbe river and the port. This brewery/restaurant is spread out over 3 floors of cavernous space for mingling and dining.
The terrace is the place to be. When the sun is setting and the breeze cools you off on a warm day, nothing beats the feeling of sitting down with old pals and newly met ones.
Indulge in one of their northern German specialties, nosh on a huge pretzel or simply throw back a few pints of their house beer. They also have a full bar, so you can order an appropriate summer drink like an Aperol spritz.

Great place, we made it here twice. The first trip was after a long day at Wunderland and had dinner. The waiter was great, he spoke great English and was very helpful. The food was good as well as the beer, the atmosphere was good, large hall like dining area. They had seats that over looked the harbor as well which would be great at sunset. The second trip was a quick beer and some pretzels after taking the red bus around Hamburg. Definitely stop in for at least a beer and pretzel if you're down by the docks.

I discovered this place on the second day of my four day trip to Hamburg, and I ended up eating there two more times. Each time I tries something different ( including both tasting platters), and I was never disappointed. The worst I can come up with is that I got a cold pretzel one day, and the steak tartar was only OK compared to the stuff I ate in PARIS. Other than that foodgasam after foodgasam. Try the hamburger style pan fried whitefish, and the suckling pig, and everything else.
Oh the weisse beer is very good as well. I'm not usually a big fan, but this one is very delicate.
Give it a try. It's worth it.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - JP F.Firenze, Italy0284111 May 2018
Seasonal beer was good. The location is excellent, and the prices are ok. It's just the crowd for us is a bit old. It felt like going to a bingo night with live music... but it's a great hall.

This place is getting 5 stars for the location, it's a nice interior and a priceless view onto the river Elbe and elements of the port. The beer is getting 5 stars, too - it's brewed in house. The food is very basic, but freshly cooked and reasonably priced. They have some larger tables in the center (good for groups). Smaller tables towards the windows and a nice patio on the roof! If you plan to go during prime time and/or with a larger group, there is no way around a reservation. I ordered a local speciality (fish) - it was Matjes with a white cold sauce with onions and pickles plus some mashed potatoes - I thought I can substitute the side with fried potatoes but they only have these occasionally, it was EUR 12.90. The food can't get a better rating than a 3. Lastly the waitress was a bit rough, but that is the Northern German mentality, so no issues for me, but foreign guests may get offended - that's another 3 stars - which explains my rating of 4.

Blockbrau is a must when visiting Hamburg. My second time here and it was as good as the first! I am not much of a beer drinker but love the wheat beer. You have to have a pretzel for an appetizer. I always get the six sausages with the sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. And end it with the Apple strudel! I like it with the ice cream the best! Oh yes, and don't forget to purchase the wonderful, magical seasoning! Only available there!
